Why Ski in Sauze d’Oulx?
Sauze d’Oulx is one of the villages in the extensive Italian Milky Way ski area which covers an incredible 400km² of piste with a ski range between 1390m and 2825m, the village is located at a height of 1510m. Other villages nearby and on the same lift pass include Sestriere and Sansicario; further afield are the French ski resorts of Claviere and Montgenevre also within the Milky Way area.
The centre is car free and the village then spreads out in all directions, but it retains more of a big village feel, rather them a big town.
The local slopes are a mix of open and tree lined runs, so ideal in all weather conditions.
At weekends the slopes get busy with visitors from Turin as Sauze d’Oulx is the best and closest big ski area to this major city.

Beginners skiing in Sauze d’Oulx
Sauze d’Oulx has a small selection of slopes for total beginners. The main nursery slope is reached by a chair lift from the village and once there’s a short magic carpet. Don’t be too put off though as once you have progressed even though many runs are classified as red they are in fact of a blue standard. Best to get advice from your instructors as to which are the easier ones.
Intermediates skiing in Sauze d’Oulx
Sauze d’Oulx is best fantastic for intermediate skiers and snowboarders who like cruising runs. Some of the runs have good vertical drops some over 1km on wide reds and blues some of which are within the tree line. We particularly enjoyed the Ladies downhill from above Sansicario heading to Pariol which is one of the resorts ‘must ski’ runs for visitors in this area. When the snow is good Sauze d’Oulx is a perfect base for all levels of intermediate skier and snowboarder as the options are endless.
Advanced skiing in Sauze d’Oulx
With only 7 black runs advanced skiers will find the choices limited on the slopes, however after fresh snowfall there are many good off piste opportunities.
Snowboarding in Sauze d’Oulx
Sauze d’Oulx offers excellent terrain for boarders of all levels and once novices have mastered drag runs they will have a few more opportunities. There are good runs between the trees and the links to other resorts within the Milky Way circuit. There are a number of drags which may present issues for those not confident on drag lifts.
Après ski in Sauze d’Oulx
Sauze d’Oulx is a party town, and many bars and discos stay open until late and are a major draw for the party animals who enjoy the après ski as much as the skiing itself. There is a wide selection of restaurants to suit all pockets.
Activities off the slopes in Sauze d’Oulx
There’s a selection of shops in Sauze d’Oulx and a local sports centre too. Mountain walks are possible as well as skidoo trips. One memorable evening can be spent travelling up the slops on a snow cat to the famous mountain restaurant for dinner. Day trips to Turin, Bardonecchia are possible by coach or train so too is the French town of Briancon.
