Why Ski in St Johann?
The ski resort of St Johann in the Tirol (pronounced St Yohan) is located in the Schneewinkel ski area which overall consists of 170km of groomed pistes over 5 different villages, St Johann being one of these. So although the ski area itself in St Johann has a good number of pistes the Schneewinkel pass will ensure that you can ski up to 170km of pistes in 5 different areas.
St Johann is a ski resort best suited to families and beginner/intermediate skiers, the 7 drag lifts possibly means snow boarders won’t enjoy the resort as much as skiers. The village itself is part pedestrianised which creates a pleasant atmosphere. The snow here is generally very good and is known to often get better snow conditions then the nearby ski resorts of Kitzbuhel and Kirchberg. This is backed up with a very good snowmaking system which covers the whole area, so you should be pretty much guaranteed good conditions.
The ski slopes face all directions so it’s possible to find good snow in both the morning and late afternoon. For cross country skiers this is an excellent choice, St Johann is one of the best cross country resorts in Austria with 275km of trails to explore. This is a testament to the good snow cover that always hits the area.
The lift system consists of 3 gondolas, 4 chair lifts and 7 drag lifts, some are a little slow. The main lift is located about 10 minutes’ walk from the centre, and it’s possible to catch the free resort bus from most of our hotels if you don’t fancy the walk.
The ski runs include 94 blue runs, 59 reds and 17 black runs Over the FULL area.
There is a kindergarten for children aged between 3 to 5 which can be pre-booked, it’s open Sunday to Thursday from 10am to 1:30 pm and costs around £150 per child, lunch is approx. an additional €10 per day.
The best airports to reach St Johan from are Innsbruck (approx. 90 minutes) or Salzburg (approx. 90 to 120 minutes)

Expert Ratings
Beginners skiing in St Johan
St Johan would be a perfect destination for first time skiers. We receive good reports about the local ski school and the slopes are uncrowded.
Intermediates skiing in St Johan
The local runs offer timid intermediates a good option for building up confidence. Better intermediates may want to travel to the other resorts covered on the Schneewinkel area.
Advanced skiing in St Johan
There is little in St Johan to challenge advanced and expert skiers in the local area. The wider ski area will offer more options for expert skiers.
Après ski in St Johan
The partly pedestrianised centre has plenty of cafes and bars to enjoy the Après St Johann and it can get quite lively early on. There are about 50 restaurants to choose from in St Johann. We highly recommend Stanglwirt (+43 5358 2000), it’s a little way out of St. Johann, and is well worth a visit for lunch or dinner, not just for the excellent food but also to its trademark ‘Cow barn’
Activities off the slopes in St Johan
St Johan offers plenty to do off the slopes, there is an excellent leisure centre with pool and a 3km floodlit toboggan run, ideal for families. 60km of marked walking trails are available as an alternative to skiing.
