There’s something undeniably exhilarating about pushing off for that first run of the day, but for me personally, it’s even more exceptional when it’s the first run on the first day of a brand New Year. Gliding down a freshly pisted run is like making a fresh start in every sense.
In my teenage years, I usually welcomed in the New Year down my local pub or at a party, counting down to midnight, and then hugging as many people as possible before making resolutions that were quickly forgotten about.
I still recognise the New Year as a fresh start of some kind, but it is the dawn of the new first day of the year that I find intoxicating – rather than an intoxicated midnight toast.
And if you love skiing and snowboarding, making that first run is a wonderful way to start a New Year. In ski areas, there are always plenty of opportunities and different ways to celebrate. Bars and restaurants offer special entertainment and extended après ski, and resorts often put on special music concerts where you can dance in the streets before joining in a mass countdown to midnight and the beginning of a New Year.
If you prefer something a little more sedate, catered chalet companies will organise special New Year’s Eve dinners where you can enjoy the company of family and friends in a more intimate atmosphere.
Seeing in the New Year in a ski resort has become extremely popular and bookings this year have been particularly buoyant. There is still availability if you know where to look… and Ski Line know where to look!
Resorts always have some form of celebrations and so to give you a flavour, here are just a few examples of what you can expect from a ski and snowboard trip in some of the European areas over the New Year.
