Snow conditions on European glaciers are significantly improved this summer compared to the previous year, thanks to colder and snowier weather during the spring season, unlike in spring 2022.
Héléna Hospital, an employee at Les Deux Alpes, expressed delight in the current superb snow conditions. She mentioned that she had been at the summits all weekend and found the conditions to be excellent. The athletes from race teams are satisfied with the training conditions as well.
Presently, there are six open glacier ski areas across four countries in the Alps, with an additional two smaller centres in Norway.
Les Deux Alpes, traditionally open from June to August or early September, reconsidered its opening strategy due to the effects of climate change. In recent years, glaciers experienced significant melting during the hottest month of summer, resulting in limited summer skiing opportunities. This year, the resort opened in early May and is planned to remain operational until the end of June. However, due to the extended favourable conditions, the season has been prolonged until July 9th, providing 10 weeks of skiing. Val d’Isere, which started its summer skiing four weeks ago, will also conclude its operations this weekend. On the other hand, Switzerland’s Saas Fee is scheduled to open for the 2023-2024 season in mid-July.
Currently, skiing is possible at Tignes, Hintertux, Passo Stelvio, and Zermatt. The Zermatt glacier offers lifts that operate from Cervinia as well. In Norway, the Folgefonn and Galdhopiggen glaciers are also open for skiing.
