Love Is In The Mountain Air

With Valentine’s Day almost upon us, how about a romantic ski or snowboard trip to the mountains? Plus, below are some other events being held in ski areas that might tickle your fancy this season.

Resorts always have plenty of activities for couples to enjoy together and to give you a flavour, here are a few suggestions for some intimate interludes for visitors to Innsbruck in Austria where skiers and snowboarders have access to 12 different ski areas using a SKI plus CITY Pass. This pass also includes entry to 22 city attractions and free public transport.

The old town in ‘Austria’s Capital of the Alps’ is a maze of alleyways and picturesque little restaurants and boutiques. Enjoy a leisurely evening stroll with your partner and take the romance level up a notch by whispering sweet nothings into their ear under the Flüsterbogen – the ‘whispering arch’ – at Hofgasse 12.

Take a night out at one of the events which form part of the Winter Dance Festival (30 January-2 March 2025). One of the highlights is ‘Boléro’ – a production inspired by universal themes such as love, fate, and human nature. It is being staged at the Congress in Innsbruck on 22 February.

There is a classical evening concert at the Haus der Musik (House of Music) on Valentine’s Day, 14 April, itself. The Tyrolean Symphony Orchestra is performing Mozart and Haydn under the baton of musical director Howard Arman.

If you prefer more energetic and fun pursuits with your partner, go tobogganing after dark in the Rangger Köpfl ski resort. On Tuesday and Friday evenings, you can take the Oberperfuss cable car up to Sulzstich before walking a short distance to the quaint Rosskogelhütte mountain hut.

After spending an evening in the cosy ambience, put on helmets and headlamps and set off in tandem on a toboggan ride down the mountain.

For a romantic meal, dine in style in Innsbruck at the Lichtblick rooftop restaurant which has views over the city. For more breathtaking vistas go for brunch in the SKY restaurant at the top of the Bergisel ski jump. For vegetarians, there are mouthwatering menus at Blum, and vegans will be won over by the delectable dishes available at Olive.

For fish lovers, the Schwarzfischer restaurant in Stams, which is now featured in the Gault et Millau and Falstaff restaurant guides, serves up fresh and local catches of the day.

Those who are a little more adventurous may like to experience some of the other activities Morzine has to offer… such as caving!
