My recent trip to Bulgaria was an absolute blast, filled with stunning snowy landscapes, incredible people, and plenty of thrilling ski experiences. I had the chance to visit three of the country’s top ski resorts Bansko, Borovets, and Pamporovo and each offered something unique, whether it was snowboarding for the first time, enjoying the après-ski scene, or unwinding at a relaxing spa. If you’re planning a ski getaway, Bulgaria should definitely be on your radar.

Borovets: A Thrill-Seeker’s Playground
Borovets was our first stop, and it immediately captured my heart. This resort offers fantastic skiing and snowboarding opportunities, with a lively vibe that is perfect for those who love adventure and nightlife. Whether you’re hitting the slopes or taking a break at one of the cosy mountain restaurants, the energy here is contagious. The après-ski spots, located right at the bottom of the mountain, offer a fun, relaxed atmosphere that keeps you going long after the last lift. It’s a place where you can both enjoy the adventure and let loose after a day on the slopes.
A few places I’d love to shout out include:
- The Happy Duck: A family-run business where you’re welcomed with open arms and treated like one of their own, plus fantastic and affordable drinks and food options.
- Jack’s: A great spot for après-ski fun with an English DJ spinning all our British favourites, along with affordable drinks.
- Buzz Bar: A fantastic way to end your day as you head back to the hotel, enjoying some karaoke and good vibes.
- Frankos: A friendly restaurant right at the base of the slopes, with great food and an authentic feel.
Pamporovo: The Ultimate Relaxation Destination
Next up was Pamporovo, the perfect contrast to Borovets. While Bansko and Borovets were all about adventure and excitement, Pamporovo offered a more tranquil, peaceful experience. If you’re someone who enjoys skiing but also wants to relax, this is the place to be. Known for its serene atmosphere, Pamporovo is ideal for unwinding. After a day on the slopes, nothing beats a luxurious spa treatment to soothe your muscles. The stunning views and fresh mountain air provide the ideal backdrop for recharging. One of the best spa is in Pomporovo at ‘The Perelik’ and it is called the ‘Body & Soul SPA lounge’, it is located on 3 levels and incorporates a variety of healing, relaxing, beauty treatments and spa therapies, there is certainly something for everyone at this spa.
What made this experience even more memorable was the warmth of the ski instructors and reps, they truly go the extra mile to ensure you have the best time and make you feel right at home.
If you want to enjoy a drink after your time in the spa, I have a couple of recommendations:
- Dak’s Irish Pub: Keeps the drinks flowing with a laid-back atmosphere, perfect for a chat and a laugh.
- The White Hart: With great tunes and friendly, chatty bartenders, this place has an incredibly
- welcoming vibe that’s perfect for winding down.
Bansko: The Heart of Adventure and Nightlife
Finally, we headed to Bansko, another gem of Bulgaria. With its combination of fantastic slopes and vibrant nightlife, it’s the perfect destination for both adventure seekers and those looking to unwind after a day on the slopes. The mountain views from the ski lifts were absolutely breathtaking, and the sense of community among fellow skiers made it feel like one big, welcoming family. The après-ski scene here is not to be missed after a day on the slopes, there’s nothing better than relaxing with a drink and good company. The best part? Everything from drinks to meals is incredibly affordable! One key fact to know about Bansko is there is a historical old town in Bansko which has a 150 year old clock tower which offers an authentic feel, Bansko Old Town offers a lovely mix of history, culture, and scenic beauty, making it a must-see destination for anyone visiting the region.
Bansko is packed with excellent spots to enjoy the nightlife, including:
- The Queen’s Pub for that classic British pub vibe.
- Happy End, a bottom-of-the-mountain après-ski spot you don’t want to miss.
- Amigos, where you can enjoy amazing rock and roll tunes every night.
- Oxygen, perfect for the end-of-night clubbing scene.
A Visit to Sofia: Bulgaria’s Vibrant Capital
After an incredible week at the 3 resorts, I spent my final day in Sofia, Bulgaria’s vibrant capital. The city offers a great mix of history, culture, and modern attractions. I explored some of the stunning architecture, such as the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, and wandered through the charming streets filled with cafes and local shops. Sofia’s blend of old and new makes it a fascinating place to visit, and I highly recommend taking a day or two to explore before heading home.
Standout Moments and Amazing People
One of the highlights of the trip was how welcoming everyone was. From the instructors to the Balkan reps and fellow holidaymakers, the people I met were all so friendly, creating an amazing sense of community. It truly felt like being part of something special, and it made the whole experience even more memorable.
Top Tips for Beginner Skiers and Snowboarders
If you’re a beginner, here are a few tips that helped make my trip easier:
- Travel Insurance is a Must: Make sure you have adequate coverage before hitting the slopes.
- Comfort is Key: If you’re feeling uncomfortable in your gear or while learning, don’t hesitate to talk to your instructor. Comfort is essential for an enjoyable experience.
- Stay Hydrated: Skiing and snowboarding can be tiring work, so carry water bottles and keep yourself hydrated throughout the day.
- Lip Balm and Helmet: Protect your lips from the cold and wind with lip balm, and never skimp on safety by wearing a helmet.
- Charge Your Devices: You’ll be taking plenty of photos and videos, so bring a power bank to ensure your devices stay charged.

Aside from skiing, Bulgaria has so much to offer. Here are a few travel tips:
