What do people want to do on their ski and snowboard holidays? This question is one of the regular topics that gets debated whenever I meet up with groups of other ski journalists or holiday companies.
I am firmly in the camp that believes the vast majority of Brits go on trips to the mountains purely to do as much skiing and snowboarding as they can. They might try other activities that catch their eye while they are in the resort, but these won’t necessarily affect their choice when booking a destination.
However, some of my colleagues disagree and their argument is backed up by a recent study by ABTA which claims there is an increasing trend by British holidaymakers towards enjoying a full mountain experience.
Taking advantage of wellness and spa facilities, plus mountain dining, already features on the ‘wish list’ of most British skiers and snowboarders, and there are already traditional attractions such as snowshoeing, sledding, ice skating, and snowmobiling.
But there are also now plenty of other weird and wonderful snow-related experiences to enjoy, plus numerous diverse special events which I will highlight throughout the season.
Here are a few to get you started:
Pilot a Bobsleigh in La Plagne
Visitors to the large French ski area of La Plagne have already been able to enjoy the thrill of a bobsleigh run on the resort’s own track. From this season, you can try piloting a bobsleigh. A professional pilot and certified instructors from the French bobsleigh federation will take you on a track walk to study the best line before two descents in a two-person bobsleigh – one as a pilot, and the other as a passenger. This is followed by a debriefing.

Take a Skywalk in the Austrian Tirol
The Sechszeiger Skywalk is a new winter walking trail in the Austrian Tirol’s Pitztal Valley. The 2km scenic loop starts at the summit of the Sechszeiger chairlift, and guides visitors to the peak of Sechszeiger Mountain, at nearly 2,400m. Walkers are treated to awe-inspiring panoramic vistas of the Inn and Gurgl valleys.

Ice Diving in Morzine
Lake Montriond in Morzine, part of the large Franco/Swiss Portes du Soleil region, offers an opportunity to descend into a unique subaquatic landscape beneath the frozen surface during the winter months. Under the guidance of ice diving professionals, this experience is available to both beginners and seasoned divers.

A World on the Brink in Verbier
The 2025 Verbier Art Summit, explores the timely theme: ‘QUARTER LIFE CRISIS. Art in a World on the Brink’. The event, curated by Philip Tinari, director of the UCCA Center for Contemporary Art in China, examines how art is responding to global challenges, including geopolitical shifts, rapid digital transformation, and evolving concepts of identity. It is taking place at the W Hotel in Verbier, Switzerland, on 4–5 April 2025.

Do You Want To Dive Into More Mountain Adventures?: A Summary
While the majority of British mountain visitors travel for the thrill of skiing or snowboarding, a significant portion of them also seek other mountain experiences, as well as enjoying après-ski, wellness activities, and other snow-related or cultural adventures. This trend reflects a shift toward more diverse, experience-based holidays in winter destinations.
